Catalogues Raissones- International Foundation for Art Research (IFAR)
Catalogues raisonnés — scholarly compilations of an artist's body of work — are critical tools for researching the provenance and attribution of artwork. Below are two new electronic resources — a database of published catalogues raisonnés and one of catalogues in preparation.
Index to Print Catalogues Raisonnés:
An online edition of The Print Council Index to Oeuvre-Catalogues of Prints by European and American Artists by Timothy A. Riggs, expanded and updated by Lauren B. Hewes and Nicole Simpson. The database now contains entries for European and American prints, print publishers, drawings, and photographs; and Japanese prints and photographs.
Catalogue Raisonné Scholars Association
The Catalogue Raisonné Scholars Association was founded in 1993 as an affiliated society of the College Art Association to serve the interests of scholars and those engaged in the catalogue raisonné process. Our members typically research a single artist’s body of work to establish a reliable list of authentic works, their chronology, and history (usually including provenance, bibliographic, and exhibition histories).

What is a Catalogue Raisonné?

A catalogue raisonné is a comprehensive, annotated listing of all the known works of an artist either in a particular medium or all media. They may provide some or all of the following:

Title and title variations
Dimension/Size
Date of the work
Medium
Current location/owner at time of publication
Provenance (history of ownership)
Exhibition history
Condition of the work
Bibliography/Literature that discusses the work
Essay(s) on the artist
Critical assessments and remarks
Full description of the work
Signatures, Inscriptions, and Monograms of the artist
Reproduction of each work
List of works attributed, lost, destroyed, and fakes
