ART 4391/ 5390 Critical Theory & Research Methods: Indexes

Periodical Indexes & Abstracts

Periodical indexes are tools used to find articles in journals, newspapers, and magazines.  They exist in two forms:

  • As online subscription databases that contain the full-text of some of the articles found in the database:
    • EBSCO
    • Lexis/Nexis
    • ProQuest
    • Library's online catalog
  • As print indexes and abstracts found in the library

Print periodical indexes and abstracts provide only citation information for each article indexed requiring the user to locate the full-text of the article. Abstracts are indexes that provide a summary of the indexed article in addition to the citation information.
