Hello! Welcome to the General Psychology research guide at the UT Tyler library.
This guide is designed to inform you about resources for your studies in all aspects of general psychology.
Please be aware that some links in this guide will link out to other UT Tyler guides, databases, and other Internet sources in new browser tabs.
In general, psychology involves the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. Research is conducted on both humans and animals to help us better understand what kinds of behaviors people exhibit, why people engage in behaviors, and what are the functions that allow behavior to occur. Toward these endeavors, much emphasis is placed on studying the brain in conjunction with cognition, emotion, perception, personality, sensation, and other concepts. Often, psychology analyzes the individual -- how an individual thinks, feels, and behaves.
There are many different types of psychology and many different theories that guide the varied forms of psychological research.
For example, clinical psychology is interested in using assessment, diagnosis, and psychotherapy to help people deal with a range of developmental, medical, and mental problems.
Industrial-Organizational psychology focuses on employment and the workplace, including topics such as human resources activities, training assessment, tactics for motivating employees, and performance management.
Social psychology looks at interactions between people and groups by blending individual and social elements to examine ideas of self-concept, group dynamics, and social interaction.
These are just a few examples; many other types of psychology exist.

If you'd like to set up an appointment with me to talk about your assignments, send me an e-mail. Let me know what the assignment is about, what research you've done thus far, and any other related information.
I will be glad to help you with using the databases, looking for books, brainstorming ideas, citing sources, and related tasks. However, I can't help you write your paper, do your statistics, or complete any of your homework assignments.
Remember, any of the Reference staff at our library can assist you with the basics of research help, but if you need assistance with psychology specifically, please feel free to let me know!
